The
parsonage, which had been owned by the Lydia in Jordan congregations
was sold to Jordan and, for a short period, living accommodations
were rented at Spring Lake for the Lydia pastor. After much
discussion, it was decided to build a new parsonage north
of the church.
When
Lydia became independent, all the church in cemetery records
were stored in a safe in the church. Reverend Elenbass was
the first pastor to live in the new parsonage. Upon completion
of the parsonage, dedication services were held at the church
with a potluck dinner being served at noon. Many former
members as well as new members of the congregation were
in attendance. Misfortune befell the gathering when it was
discovered that the safe had been stolen. It is the general
belief that the safe was stolen because the thieves assumed
that we had charged for the potluck dinner and kept the
money in the safe. As it was, the dinner had not been charged
for and any money from the collection at the morning service
had been taken home by the treasurers. Although the loss
was not monetary, It was still a difficult blow as all the
church’s legal documents were in the safe. In addition,
much of our church history, which many members had researched
carefully was in the safe.
Since
the building of the parsonage in the later1980’s,
many changes have taken place at the Lydia church. The stage
or platform where the pulpit stood has been removed making
additional seating for approximately 25 people. They cry
room has been put at the west end of the sanctuary for the
convenience of mothers of babies as well as a nursery with
attendance, and a small play room for toddlers on the downstairs
level. Most of these additions have been done by the donation
of many hours of labor by members of the congregation. |
